Cut or Scraped? Here's How to Know If You Need Stitches
Not every cut needs a trip to the ER, but some do. Here's how to tell the difference.
A small nick on your finger or a scrape on your knee usually just needs a bandage and a little time. But what about a deeper cut? How do you know when it's time to seek medical care, and where should you go?
Dr. Brian Mayer, Regional Medical Director at Methodist Legacy ER & Urgent Care, shares what to look for and how to decide whether a cut may need stitches.
Do I Need Stitches?
While a medical provider should make the final decision, Dr. Mayer says these are some common signs that a cut may require stitches:
"On the other hand, a shallow cut with smooth edges or a small puncture wound often doesn't require stitches, but if you're unsure, it's always better to have it evaluated than to guess."
Where to go for care
Once you've decided the cut needs medical attention, the next question is where to go. According to Dr. Mayer, the answer depends on the severity of the injury.
Go to the ER if:
- The cut is very deep or gaping.
- Blood is spurting or bleeding is severe and won't stop despite direct pressure.
- The wound has torn or ragged edges.
- Muscle, tendon, bone, or a large blood vessel is visible.
- The injury is over a joint and appears deep.
- The cut involves the face, scalp, eye, or another high-risk area.
- An object is embedded in the wound.
Urgent Care is often the right choice for:
- Straightforward cuts that may need stitches but aren't severe.
- Shallow lacerations with controlled bleeding.
- Cuts caused by dirty or rusty objects when nothing is embedded.
- Minor wounds that need cleaning, closure, or a tetanus shot.
"If you're ever in doubt, don't try to diagnose it yourself. Come in and let us take a look. We'd much rather evaluate a cut early than have you wait until it becomes a bigger problem."
